N.W.A. Tip Of The Week
I’ve seen some dumb shit in my 12 years in the fitness industry.
But the Sugar Diet just may be the dumbest…
There’s a new trend – “sugar fasting” – that has become popular recently.
The premise is simple – eat only sugar.
Nothing else.
You can choose from sugar, honey, fruit, maple syrup, and/or sugary/fruity candy.
100% pure sugar – no dietary fat, no protein.
Many clips of Mark “Stinky” Bell – an internet personality and podcaster – showing off his results from the diet have gone viral.
This has caused people to take pause and take notice.
And wonder “Is the Sugar Diet legit?”
“Is this something I should try?”
We must have come full circle or something.
When I started in this business, sugar was the “boogeyman”.
It caused diabetes.
It made you fat.
It caused cancer.
It was essentially the nutritional devil.
And here we are, 12+ years later, and eating ONLY SUGAR AND NOTHING ELSE is gaining popularity online.
What a crazy world we live in…
Alright, let’s break this down…
I’m guessing you’ll know what my take on “The Sugar Diet” is before I even start.
But hey, when a ridiculous diet like this gains traction online, I think to myself, “Cool! That’s some easy content for my newsletter!”
LOL.
First and foremost, yes, Mark Bell’s results from eating sugar are pretty good.
There are simple explanations for this.
But also keep in mind Mark is using anabolic steroids/PED’s.
His results are not going to be the same as yours.
Fact #1: Elimination diets always work for fat loss short term; elimination diets seldom work for fat loss long term.
An elimination diet is any diet that “eliminates” certain foods from your diet.
Keto is an elimination diet.
Carnivore is an elimination diet.
Vegan is an elimination diet.
And yes, the Sugar Diet is an elimination diet.
These diets DO cause fat loss.
You are restricting your dietary choices, and as a result, your overall calories (usually) drop, and you get into a proper deficit.
However, extreme restriction like this is almost never a good, long term solution.
Nobody is going to be eating just meat… or pure sugar… for the rest of their lives.
Hopefully, anyways.
Fact #2: It is nearly impossible to gain fat eating 100% carbohydrates, without any dietary fat or protein.
This is contrary to popular belief – gurus far and wide will tell you carbs are inherently fattening.
This is not true – in fact, the opposite is true.
You have to massively overfeed yourself carbs in order for your body to turn the excess energy via carbs into body fat.
However, dietary fat consumed over your calorie maintenance gets turned into body fat very easily.
Therefore, a diet completely devoid of dietary fat, and consisting of all sugar/carbs actually won’t cause any body fat gain at all, interestingly enough.
Fact #3: The massive sugar intake will fill your cellular glycogen and make your muscles look great (temporarily).
Your cells are like sponges to carbs and sugar.
When you ingest a lot of sugar, your muscle cells will soak that sugar up, and give you a swollen, pumped up look.
If you have low body fat to begin with (like Mark), this will make you look great aesthetically, at least for a little while.
Okay, those 3 items are the “positives” (if there are any) of The Sugar Diet.
Now… let’s get real here for a minute…
Fact #4: The lack of protein in The Sugar Diet will cause muscle loss over time.
Remember – Mark is on steroids.
Being on anabolic steroids will mitigate any muscle loss risk a normal person would have to deal with.
Protein is extremely important when dieting, but when you’re natural, the importance skyrockets – it’s pretty much a necessity to make sure you’re not losing muscle.
Fact #5: The lack of fat in The Sugar Diet will screw up your hormones and tank your testosterone over time.
Let me say it again – remember – Mark is on steroids.
I’ve coached people on steroids before.
Here’s how it works…
For a natural person, every macronutrient is important, and serves a purpose.
Protein reduces hunger and helps you maintain muscle.
Carbs are quick energy sources and keep you feeling good during and after your workouts.
Fats help regulate your hormones, and are good for your hair, nails, skin, etc.
But when you’re taking steroids, your hormones are artificially optimized.
And your risk of muscle loss is non-existent (the entire reason most people take them).
Steroids change the game.
Unless you’re on them, The Sugar Diet is extremely risky – avoid at all costs.
So yeah…
The Sugar Diet could take the cake for being the dumbest diet I’ve ever seen online, period, hands down.
People are always searching for a shortcut.
That is never going to change.
Luckily, you’re reading this, though.
If I can save just one person from trying such a silly, idiotic diet, I will have done my part for humanity.
And on a side note, The Sugar Diet sounds fun for like 3 hours.
After that… oh my goodness… what an awful way to eat!
