N.W.A. Tip Of The Week
This week, I’m going to venture off from my normal discussions of macros, calories, and workouts.
Today, I’m going to talk about the #1 existential threat to men’s sexual health, and perhaps, the future of the western society.
I’m talking about pornography, specifically high speed, internet based porn, accessible 24/7 with nothing but a smart phone.
Erotic imagery and film is nothing new; it’s been around for decades, if not hundreds of years.
But in the last 15 years, our access to it has become instantaneous, available to everyone, everywhere, at all times.
Back when I was in high school, the curious kids were relegated to a few crusty magazines or a VHS tape or two, which for some reason were always found “in the woods”.
(This is such a weird phenomenon, but yes, “the woods” is always where these sorts of things were housed. Probably due to the stigma and/or embarrassment of having them in the house.)
Once smart phones were invented, and streaming video became a thing, everything changed, and not always for the better…
What used to be an anxiety inducing, embarrassing activity (going to the porn shop to purchase something) now could be done in the privacy of our own bedrooms, without anyone knowing.
Yes, with smartphones, we became able to choose from countless online options to watch TV and movies on platforms like Netflix and Hulu.
Yes, we became able to immediately see sports highlights, or watch our favorite sporting events, even on the go.
Yes, we became able to record special, family moments, and send them to loved ones in seconds.
So, it’s certainly not all bad.
But it also means anyone with a phone in their hand has immediate access to recordings of the most depraved sexual acts anyone can comprehend.
Now, you might be saying, “What’s the big deal, Jason? Stop being such a square! You should be more open, and ‘sex positive’!”
And I would say you’re just putting your head in the sand, and you’re not seeing the issues this is causing to our society.
I recently asked my 15 year old daughter why she doesn’t have a boyfriend.
She’s beautiful.
She’s intelligent.
She’s polite.
She’s athletic and plays sports.
She has excellent social skills and an endearing personality.
She told me that boys just don’t talk to girls much these days.
They don’t flirt.
They don’t have any confidence (or “rizz” as the kids call it).
They rarely ask girls out.
They just stay glued to their phones – they often live in the virtual world, instead of the real world.
I didn’t say anything to her… as she’s only 15… but if they’re spending most of their hours in their room, on their smart phones…
… Well… that means it’s almost certain they’re developing a crippling addiction to internet pornography.
Pornography creates a dopaminergenic response in our brains.
Meaning, when we see images that excite us, a small spritz of dopamine coats our brains.
That feels good – it’s undeniable.
But there’s a problem with it.
Dopamine is like a drug.
At first, the “hit” is profound.
But in order for the dopamine to have the same effect, the intensity of the imagery needs to increase.
The brain seeks novelty in these situations.
The ‘same old’ video just doesn’t cut it any more.
The individual goes deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole, seeking out more provocative and seedy videos to get their fix.
And with pornography being a multi-billion dollar business, there’s a never-ending supply of material to satiate even the most seasoned user.
So, what happens when a young, teenage boy is using internet pornography daily, and seeking out such filth?
Confidence is stripped, and social anxiety ramps up.
Viewing pornography excessively is an inherently shameful action.
The user knows what they’re doing is a morally corrupt activity.
When faced with carrying on a conversation, looking someone in the eyes when speaking to them, or (gasp), approaching a girl and talking to them, it can seem an insurmountable task.
After all, your smartphone never rejects you, not even once.
Testosterone drops, and the user becomes feminized.
Testosterone should be pulsating through the veins of a healthy, teenage boy.
Talking to, flirting with, and dating girls should (probably) be the first thing on their minds (it sure was for me).
But excessive pornography use can blunt testosterone production.
The normal, healthy energy testosterone creates gets poured into pornography consumption and mastrubation.
And as such, energy for talking to girls in real life becomes depressed.
Sexual performance tanks, making it difficult to have actual, real life sexual experiences with women.
Think I’m being dramatic?
Notice the massive rise in sexual performance drugs like Viagara and Cialis.
What do you think is fueling the success of companies like “Hims” who sell these drugs online?
Do you notice these drugs are marketed almost exclusively to young men, aged 18-25?
There’s a reason for this.
And it’s not plastics in the food or obesity.
It’s the prevalence of internet pornography addiction, rearing its ugly head.
Watching non-stop porn causes male impotency, making arousal and erections difficult to achieve.
How can an 18 year old male be able to perform sexually, when they’re used to seeing unrealistic images of fantasy, all in 4K, non-stop for hours every night before bed?
A real woman is no match for the pixels they’re used to seeing on the screen.
Birth rates are dropping.
A record number of people are avoiding the dating scene altogether.
More young people are having less sex than at any other time in the history of the world.
Marriages are being ruined…
This is a serious problem…
I won’t say I have the answer to this on a ‘macro’ level.
Internet pornography isn’t going away, not now, and not ever.
It’s too popular and makes too many people too much money.
But on a micro level, you can avoid it.
And rid your life of its temptation.
As a parent, you can speak directly to your sons (and daughters) about the evils of internet porn, and to abstain from it at all costs.
Until we start having serious discussions on this topic, the issues will keep accelerating, and getting worse.
All YOU can do is be sure you’re not a number or a statistic.

“You spent 10 years being lazy and gluttonous, you can spend 2 years being disciplined”.
