N.W.A. Tip Of The Week
We all have our reasons to lift weights (at least we should).
Maybe you lift weights to have a higher quality of life.
Maybe you lift weights to bulletproof yourself as you age.
Maybe you lift weights to be able to pick up your grandkids without throwing out your back.
Maybe you lift weights to be more attractive… or have more confidence… or increase your self worth…
Every one of those reasons is valid.
Last week, something happened that made me smile.
It was a bit of a… “different” reason to lift weights.
Especially if you’re a Dad…
My oldest daughter Brooklyn just turned 14.
She’s a Daddy’s girl for sure.
Since the day she was born, she’s had me wrapped around her finger.
She’s hard working, polite, intelligent, well spoken, and it makes my heart ache a bit to know I only have a few years left with her under our roof.
Brooklyn recently started dating a boy for the first time.
On their first “date”, he took her fishing in a pond by our house.
Ironically, I’ve been trying to get Brooklyn to go fishing with me for the last 5 years.
I guess I need a floppier haircut or something, I don’t know…
In reality, her new boyfriend is a great kid.
He has good grades, hangs out with a good crowd, and treats Brooklyn well.
As a Dad, that’s all I could ever ask for.
I’m glad we raised Brooklyn right, and she made a solid choice (and I pray she will continue in that fashion).
One night, a few weeks ago, Brooklyn’s boyfriend walked her home after hanging out with her (he lives close to us).
He walked her all the way to the door, and when I opened it, he introduced himself to me, and shook my hand while looking me in the eyes.
We chatted for a bit, and I was impressed with how he handled himself.
Social skills are a lost art; he could have easily avoided meeting me if he had wanted to.
A few days later, I told Brooklyn I really liked her new boyfriend, and she had chosen well.
Brooklyn said to me, “I’m happy to hear that, because he’s absolutely terrified of you.”
I was a bit confused…
I had been nothing but cordial to the kid.
I didn’t do anything to purposefully intimidate him or anything.
I asked her why he was so scared of me..
Her exact words were: “He said you’re enormous and are super muscular.”
I smiled, and simply said, “Good”.
I left it at that.
A bit of healthy fear is a good thing in these situations.
It means he’ll think twice about treating Brooklyn poorly (not that he would ever do that, of course).
I can’t stand the “I have guns” rhetoric you see lots of men joking around about when it comes to their daughter’s boyfriends.
That reeks of insecurity.
If you need to use the threat of firearms, that’s weak sauce.
Instead, Dads, lift weights.
Be strong.
Increase your confidence.
Others will take notice.
Including your daughter’s future boyfriends… which is an invaluable thing, if you ask me…
