This looks like a job for me,
So everybody just follow me,
‘Cause we need to go lift weights you see,
The gym will be so empty without me.

N.W.A. Tip Of The Week
Sometimes I have to pinch myself that I get to teach fitness concepts and help people get into fantastic shape – via the internet – for my career.
If you had sat 23 year old me down after he had just graduated from college and said,
“Hey, man, you’re only going to teach for 12 years… after that, you’ll send out emails and make videos for the internet, and create programs that help people get healthy… and you’ll do it at home on your laptop”…
…I would have looked at you like you were batshit crazy.
But a lot has changed since 2004.
Online coaching is big business.
Most people I know have tried some form of internet based health coaching by now.
Every coach has a website and an app to allow them to reach more people than the old school, in-house personal trainers.
The decision to hire an internet based coach like myself is a personal one.
For some people, the in-person touch is a valuable aspect for them.
For some people, they need someone physically “cracking the whip” in person or they won’t follow through.
But if you’re the right type of person – willing to stay consistent – online coaching can be the best investment you ever make (just ask our clients).
But there are a few things you need to know before you invest in an online coach.
Here are 4 things you need to keep in mind before you take the plunge.
Thing #1: Do not hire a coach because you think he has the “secret” to getting into great shape.
Want the “secret”?
The secret is there are no secrets.
You need to eat in a calorie deficit.
You need to eat enough protein.
You need to lift weights.
You need to get your steps in.
You need to stay consistent with the 4 above things.
That’s it.
That’s all there is to it.
If a coach is claiming they have some super-secret-biohack (and it has a slick, fancy name like “Mr. Mc-Goo’s Fat Incinerating Furnace Body”), it’s just marketing, nothing more.
Thing #2: Do not hire a coach based strictly on their physique.
I do think a coach should be in solid shape.
You’ve gotta walk the walk and show people you can execute the programs you’ve giving to clients.
(Here’s my current physique if you need an example of what I mean.)
But if you hire a coach because they have a specific “look” you want, you likely won’t get it.
Everyone has different genetics.
There are some people who can smash the weights for 30 years, and just won’t grow much muscle beyond a certain point.
On the flip side, there are some people who are hyper responders to weight training – it seems they grow muscle rapidly without much effort.
Never mind the fact that these days, many coaches are on PED’s, or testosterone at least (which makes it much easier to get results).
The coach you hire should be in shape, BUT that should not be your only reason for hiring them.
Thing #3: You should hire a coach if you need accountability.
There’s no substitute for investing in yourself, and having “skin in the game”.
If you already understand what to do, but you can’t seem to get yourself to do it, you’re a prime candidate for an online coach.
True story – In 2015, I had a horrible mental block when it came to my diet.
I couldn’t get consistent to save my life – and I was 3 years into my career as a coach.
I knew exactly what to do, but for some reason, I couldn’t bring myself to do it – and I needed to drop about 25 pounds.
So, I hired a coach.
He literally told me nothing I didn’t know.
He gave me some macros and calorie targets, made me a workout program, and I checked in with him every 2 weeks.
Since I knew he would be holding me accountable, the funniest thing happened.
I got past my mental block and dropped 23 pounds in 3 months’ time.
Problem solved.
If this is you – knowing how to do it but struggling for the motivation – hiring a coach can be the most valuable thing you ever do.
We all need a little “push” sometimes.
Thing #4: You should hire a coach if you have information overload.
If you’re seeing posts all over social media and you’re confused, a coach is an excellent way to cut through the bullshit and get laser focused on what really matters.
I saw an Instagram post a few weeks ago that made me cringe.
An “influencer” with millions of followers claimed there are hormone disrupting chemicals on receipt paper that are causing low testosterone, and people are getting fat because of it.
Seriously.
Receipt paper.
That’s what’s causing the obesity epidemic.
Sometimes I hate the industry I’m in…
If you hear conflicting information left and right, and you don’t know what to do, consider hiring a coach.
I can’t tell you how many times in my career clients have said, “Fitness is way simpler than I thought – thanks for keeping me focused on what really matters.”
My pleasure.
That’s what I’m here for.
Keep these 4 things in mind if you’re pondering hiring an internet based fitness coach.
It will help you make the proper decision about the best investment you can ever make – an investment in your health.
