N.W.A. Tip Of The Week
The Old Me hated exercise.
With a passion…
Whenever I’d see a fitness personality talking about how “good” exercise made them feel, I would roll my eyes.
“What on earth are they talking about” I’d say to myself…
“Exercise doesn’t feel good!”
“Exercise isn’t ‘fun’!”
“Exercise is pain! Torture! Awfulness!”
I was sure of this.
100% certain.
And now, ironically, 15 years later, I love to exercise.
I relish every second of it.
I thoroughly enjoy going to the gym each day and getting my workout in.
What changed?
How did I go from a guy who hated exercise, to a guy who loves to exercise, and can’t get enough?
Let’s make something clear… I do not like the actual act of the exercise itself.
Meaning, the actual 10-20 seconds I spend doing a set of a specific exercise… I can’t exactly call that “fun”.
That DOES hurt.
But it’s tolerable.
And honestly, I don’t mind it.
The “Old Me” – the guy who wasn’t a fan of exercise – felt this way for one, simple reason:
He didn’t get any results.
I was one of those guys who just walked into the gym and winged it.
I didn’t have a proper program, or a proper game plan.
I’d walk in and think, “Hmmm… I think I’ll work chest today…”
And I’d do a bunch of random chest exercises, picking arbitrary weights and do a bunch of sets.
Bench presses. Incline bench presses. Chest flys. Push ups. More chest flys. Burn out sets.
Just set after set after set after set until I had a great “pump”.
Then, I’d call it a day.
The sad news is, after years of doing this, I had gained no strength, and no visible size in my chest.
That’s demoralizing.
When you put in a LOT of effort, without much to show for it, it’s hard to drag yourself into the gym day in and day out.
Once I started following a real training program, and started eating the right number of calories and macros, everything changed.
I was losing weight every week.
I was gaining strength every week.
I was repeating workouts, and seeing the numbers shoot up and up.
I was seeing the fat being incinerated off my belly.
Results are addicting!
And because I was seeing results, I wanted to keep going.
I went a full, 2 years without missing one, single workout.
Somewhere along the lines, the craziest thing happened.
I realized… that I actually enjoyed exercise.
It didn’t happen at first.
It took a lot of time.
But once I started associating hard work with actual results I made the discovery that the hard work was actually kind of fun!
I knew if I pushed myself as hard as I could with each set, my results would be better.
I also knew if I “mailed it in” and didn’t perform with my full effort, I wouldn’t make any progress.
So, mailing it in stopped being an option.
Skipping workouts stopped being an option.
I wanted to gain muscle.
That doesn’t happen accidentally.
Being muscular takes intention, and consistent, daily action over the course of many years.
That fact made the “pain” of exercise seem like not that big of a deal any more.
If you hear fitness guys say “exercise because you love the way it makes you feel” and you think “it doesn’t make me feel good”, that’s just because you haven’t been consistent for long enough.
Or because you aren’t seeing real results.
Exercise feels bad when you first start.
Really bad, honestly.
It sucks, and there’s a lot of friction to keep going.
It takes a long time – months, if not years of consistency – before it finally starts feeling “good” and you start to love it.
It WILL happen eventually, though.
You just have to keep going, and force yourself to show up until it does.
