Be a simple kind of man,
And in the gym, stick to a simple plan.

(Yes, I know this isn’t 90’s gangsta rap, but I get a lot of emails from people complaining they don’t know any rap songs!)

N.W.A. Tip Of The Week
“Is it just macros and workouts?”
When I hop on a call with someone inquiring about coaching, we have a detailed chat.
I listen to their situation.
I ask them some basic questions – things like:
“How old are you?”
“What is your height and weight?”
“What is your main goal?”
“How much weight do you have to lose?”
“Have you ever strength trained before?”
“How many steps do you get per day?”
“Do you have any injuries or medical conditions?”
“What is your biggest frustration with your fitness level?”
And then, I listen.
After I hear what they have to say, I go over the details of our program.
I tell them about how it all works, and break down the nutritional component, how we train, and our data keeping process.
I tell them what kind of results they can expect, and how these results are consistent and repeatable with all of our clients, assuming consistency with the program.
Occasionally, at that point, I’ll get the question,
“So, it’s just macros and workouts?”
Listen very carefully to this – “macros and workouts are 95% of nutritional and exercise science”.
What I WANT to say is “Your distracted focus on what ACTUALLY MATTERS is why you’re in shitty shape, and you can’t get lean/strong.”
But I don’t, because that would be a bit too direct (perhaps borderline rude as well).
Yes, I suppose if you want to distill it down to its simplest form, a GOOD fitness program will be “just macros and workouts”.
But here’s what this does for you:
THE MACROS:
1. It ensures you’re finally eating enough protein.
2. It ensures you’re eating enough carbs for performance and not going too low.
3. It ensures you have enough fats to keep your hormones firing properly.
4. It ensures you’re not UNDER-EATING and you have enough food to fuel your workout sessions.
5. It ensures you’re in a proper calorie deficit and you’re not just winging your calorie intake.
6. It ensures you get to eat your favorite foods, which makes dieting more enjoyable.
7. It ensures you find foods that are “The Trifecta” – healthy, tasty, and repeatable.
8. It ensures you gravitate towards whole foods, since they’re going to stave off hunger much better than processed crap.
And most importantly:
9. It guarantees you lose fat
THE WORKOUTS:
1. It ensures you’re hitting your entire body properly and not skipping muscle groups.
2. It ensures you’re repeating workouts and striving for performance improvements each session.
3. It ensures you get enough strength/muscle building exposures over the course of a week.
4. It ensures you have an actual plan, instead of just winging it in the gym.
5. It ensures you realize – in cold, hard data – if you’re making gains or not.
6. It ensures we can adjust things if performance dips on a specific exercise.
7. It ensures we can see if you’re fatigued or over-trained and you need more rest.
8. It ensures you start to understand which exercises fit your own biomechanics so you can find optimal movements for your physiology.
So, yes, I guess it’s “just macros and workouts”.
But that’s exactly what you need to do if you want to stop spinning your wheels and get some real results.
