N.W.A. Tip Of The Week
My daughter plays travel basketball.
August is the “dead period” – there are no practices, no camps, and no games for the entire month.
But as soon as September rolls around, the practices and games ramp up again.
I told her it would be in her best interest to keep exercising for the month of August, just so she would keep in shape.
She was pretty tired though, as she had been playing many times per week for the entire year, so she took the whole month off, not exercising at all.
I warned he she would lose her wind… but she said, “Nahhhh, Dad, I’ll be fine.”
NARRATOR: “SHE WAS NOT FINE!”
Her first practice back, she was absolutely toasted.
Gasping for air.
Red face.
She had to take multiple breaks…
It sure didn’t look like fun…
On the way home I asked her if I was right… did she regret taking the whole month of August off?
She said, “Dad, you’re just different. You like working out and exercising. Most people don’t. I like playing basketball, but I don’t like working out at all.”
I nodded and smiled, and responded with, “You see, kiddo, that’s where you’re wrong… I don’t enjoy working out. But I do it anyways because I know it’s good for me.”
The Biggest Myth about people who exercise is that they actually enjoy the exercise itself.
Maybe that’s true for some people.
But that is not true for me at all, and I’ve been consistently going to the gym – without interruption – for 15 years.
That doesn’t mean I like the actual exercise, though.
I like the social aspect of the gym.
I like the gym itself.
I like the ritual of it, and how it makes me feel afterwards.
I like the endorphins, and the mental health, and sleep benefits I derive from it.
But I don’t like doing hard, intense sets of weight training.
It hurts.
It burns.
For the 20-30 seconds I’m doing a lifting set, I am certainly not enjoying myself.
Nor do I like walking for an hour every day after my workout.
It can get tedious.
It’s a bit boring.
The entire time, I’m listening to music, trying to “zone out” so the time goes by faster.
I told my daughter this.
“Exercise is like like brushing your teeth, or cleaning your room, or washing your car. You don’t actually enjoy doing the activity, but you enjoy the end result.
You like having clean, white, healthy teeth.
You like having a clean and tidy room.
You like having a sparkling, shiny car.
So, you do the activity, even though it may not be pleasant, because you know it will benefit you in the future.”
I’m not sure if she got the message.
After all, she’s 12…
But I hope you do.
If you don’t enjoy exercise, you’re not alone.
But that doesn’t give you an excuse not to exercise.
We live in the most opulent time period in all of human existence.
If you lived 150 years ago, you’d be tilling the fields from sun up to sun down, participating in grueling, backbreaking manual labor.
Consider yourself lucky – and go to the gym to pay homage to all the modern conveniences we have.
You exercise because it’s good for you.
It benefits The Future You.
That should be reason enough.
