N.W.A. Tip Of The Week
This is me, after my workout on Friday of last week:
When I look at this picture, it almost doesn’t seem real.
To think back at the me from 15 years ago, and to realize how far I’ve come makes me feel proud and satisfied with what I’ve been able to accomplish.
Here’s what I looked like in 2009, before I started taking my fitness seriously:
My Instagram account has recently exploded in popularity.
My profile has gained over 8,000 followers in the last 2 months.
I make short reels 4-5 times per week, and as I practice making them, I’m getting better and better about creating content that resonates with people.
I make reels about fat loss, muscle gain, and mindset.
And I noticed something funny, that tends to be an Instagram phenomenon.
Every time I make a reel about how to gain muscle, I get comments like:
“What muscle?” and
“Why would I take advice from you? You have no muscle.”
Social media is one of the best things that’s ever happened to me.
It’s allowed me to get my message out, build a business, and help thousands of people, all from my phone or laptop.
But it comes with its own set of problems…
We have become so conditioned to unrealistic expectations, it has distorted our perception of what’s possible as a natural trainee.
Instagram is full of 25 year old steroid freaks, genetic outliers, and photoshopped “booty girls” peddling their services and programs.
A few things about me:
- I am 43 years old.
- I have never taken a performance enhancing drug, a steroid, or even testosterone/hormonal replacement therapy.
- I am an “ectomorph” – I have long arms, long legs, and find it difficult to build muscle because of this.
- I didn’t start taking muscle building seriously until I was 34 years old.
My first fitness goal was quite simple – to not be fat.
I wanted to get the weight off of me, and get stronger in the weight room.
My second fitness goal was to be “shredded” with visible abs.
I had never had visible abs before, and I wanted to “push the limits” and see how far I could take fat loss, and how lean I could get.
At the age of 33, I reached my “goal” – I went from 300 pounds to 206.5 pounds and 7.3% body fat.
It was the lightest I had been since I was in 8th grade.
At that point, I made a realization many fitness enthusiasts make.
I didn’t have as much muscle as I thought I did.
I decided to start doing bulking and cutting cycles in an attempt to build muscle.
Since then, each year, I bulk up in the Fall and Winter, and I shred down starting in March.
I’ve been able to gain about 25 pounds of muscle over 9 years employing bulking and cutting cycles.
(It’s also important to note the only workouts I’ve done during that entire time frame are from Full Access: Anyman Fitness – our group coaching program.)
25 pounds of muscle gain is a massive accomplishment for a natural trainee.
Especially one who didn’t start training to build muscle until his mid-30’s.
Doubly so for a natural ectomorph.
I don’t have anything against steroids or testosterone.
I will probably go on testosterone at some point in my life.
I just haven’t yet, because I feel great, my numbers are good, and it isn’t needed.
So I’ll hold off – for now.
But steroids and testosterone are so alluring for one big reason – they WORK.
If I had taken either, I probably would have been able to gain 40+ pounds of muscle instead of “just” 25.
When I hear the “what muscle” comments, I’m reminded of this.
Very few of the big fitness accounts out there are completely natural; I’ve taken nothing stronger than creatine to enhance my physique.
I don’t mind the insulting comments, though, this isn’t a “woe is me” newsletter.
I let them roll off my back, they’re a part of the “game” if you’re going to put yourself out there on social media.
If you’re going to only take advice from steroid freaks, you’re not “my people”.
I’ll keep making helpful content.
A small % of the people will see the content and think, “I like this guy, I’m going to follow him.”
A small % of those followers will say, “Oh wow, look at how he helped so-and-so, I think I’ll join his mailing list.”
And a small % of those people will say, “You know what? I could use some help, what I’m doing isn’t working, I’ll join his Army.”
And that’s how I find “my people”.
I’ve never pretended to be someone I’m not.
That’s why you don’t see me clinging to trends, or hawking supplements, or changing my point of view every time the wind blows in a different direction.
I keep it real.
I tell you of my experiences, what’s worked for me, and what’s worked for the thousands of people I’ve been blessed enough to coach.
If you’re scrolling social media, and you see a post, and your 1st reaction is to be insulting, just scroll on by.
It’s not worth your time to be rude just to prove a point.
You’re just helping the person you’re insulting anyways.
The algorithm loves attention, whether it’s positive, or negative…
