N.W.A. Tip Of The Week
There are lots of tricks to go viral on the internet.
One of the most common (and lame) is to blast American food and policy as “poisonous” and “malicious”.
The “us” vs. “them” mentality many people have against the government is ripe for shares, likes, and re-tweets.
We have become so divided as a nation, and so aware of government propaganda, that many online personalities have turned to these sorts of rhetorics to build followings.
Here’s a common one I’ve seen many times:
Just look at that reach!
24.4 million views!
It just goes to show you how powerful it is to say “we are all being poisoned by our government”.
And the underlying thought is, “and this is why we are all fat”…
But is it actually TRUE?
The original poster went to Italy…
And he ate a single donut and a latte each morning for breakfast…
And he has lost 3 pounds so far in the last 9 days…
And this is proof American food is “poison”?
I have a different opinion.
That donut he’s eating is 200 calories (est).
That latte he’s drinking is 100 calories (est).
That’s 300 calories.
That’s a small breakfast by any metric. Most men have a calorie maintenance of 2,000 per day at least (usually more).
300 calories is nothing; my breakfasts are bigger than that when I’m on a fat loss diet!
Also, consider he’s in Italy, presumably on vacation.
What do you do when you’re overseas?
Do you sit inside your hotel or hostel on the internet, working and snacking on junk food, like most of us do at our jobs?
Of course not.
You see the sights. The architecture. The museums. You visit the wineries and you get outside.
You walk.
A LOT.
More than you ever would normally.
At least 20,000 steps per day, if not more.
Do you eat nice meals?
Of course you do!
So, what kind of meals would you eat while you were in Italy?
Would you eat McDonald’s and/or fast food?
Would you eat high calorie garbage like potato chips and treats from the gas station?
Nope.
You’d go find fresh, local restaurants.
You would eat whole foods and immerse yourself in the culture.
You would eat freshly caught fish, and freshly baked bread, and local cheeses (sounds amazing, right?).
Basically, you would eat whole foods that have less calories than processed junky food.
Sooooo, in essence, if you took a vacation in Europe, you would:
- Snack less
- Eat real food (that has less calories)
- Walk a LOT more than normal
And you’re wondering why you lose weight?
This isn’t proof that “American food is poison”.
This is proof that in general, as Americans, we eat too much, and don’t get enough exercise.
This is also proof that it’s not the sugar.
It’s not the seed oils.
It’s not the carbs, or the red meat, or the saturated fat.
None of those things are making us fat.
It’s simplistic, but at its core, we are eating too many calories and moving too little.
I call this man’s weight loss “The Disney Phenomenon”.
I coach a lot of people, and I have clients who often go to Disney with their families.
They are often anxious before they go.
They won’t have time to work out, and Disney food is notoriously unhealthy.
I tell them not to worry about it.
Eat 3 meals per day, no restrictions.
And even enjoy 1 treat per day if they wish.
I also guarantee they’ll come back lighter than when they left.
They always do.
Always.
Why? Because they’re walking 10+ miles every day, that’s why.
You can get away with a lot of you’re willing to walk that much…
It can be comforting to think “the reason I’m overweight is because the bad, bad government hates me”.
It gives you a reason – and an excuse – as to why you’re in the situation you’re in.
It’s much harder to admit the truth, and accept the fact that you’re simply eating too many calories, and you’re gaining weight because of it.

On a side note, before you email me nasty things, I understand America’s standards for preservatives are less strict than Europe’s.
But preservatives do not make you gain weight.
Eating too many calories does.
Consider the curious case of Mark Haub, a nutrition professor at Kansas State University.
For 10 weeks, Mark consisted on 100% junk food – Twinkies, Doritos, and the like.
He maintained a proper calorie deficit.
And he lost 27 pounds.
Not only that, but every single one of his health markers improved!
Am I advocating a diet like that?
No, definitely not, he had to feel like absolute garbage, please don’t do that.
But it does highlight that no matter what, calories are far and away the most important part of your fat loss (and overall health) equation.
