It’s time for you to kick it up a notch,
First you get a swimming pool full of liquor and you dive in it….

N.W.A. Tip Of The Week
Time for a “full disclosure” confession:
I like drinking alcohol.
Admitting that makes me feel like a fraud; after all, I’m a fitness coach and I run a health oriented fitness business.
But facts are facts.
I like the taste of a cold, frosty IPA on a Friday after a long week.
I enjoy sipping on a whisky on my back porch on a warm, summer Saturday night.
It’s one of life’s best simple pleasures.
I’m not going to pretend like it’s “good” for you.
I know it’s not.
The best amount of alcohol to drink for your health is “none”.
Before you tell me, “Having a few drinks in moderation is better for you than having none”, take a step back and think about it logically.
Do you REALLY think that’s true?
Do you REALLY think ingesting a little bit of a literal poison is a healthier choice than drinking zero poison?
Come on now.
That’s just silly.
I’ve also done a lot of reflecting on my own relationship with alcohol.
I’ve had periods of my life where I (probably) drank too much.
I also spent a full year with zero drinks to prove to myself I could do it (the health benefits were obvious and immense).
These days, I do have alcoholic drinks from time to time.
But at 44, my relationship with booze is very different from what it used to be.
I’ve developed 6 personal rules surrounding booze – I hope you find them useful.
Rule #1: Alcohol should only be consumed if you are celebrating something.
Birthdays.
Holidays.
Vacations.
Anniversaries.
A big promotion at work.
A productive, successful week.
You don’t drink alcohol “just because it’s there”.
Or “just because it’s Saturday”.
That’s NOT a good reason to imbibe.
Rule #2: Don’t drink alcohol to reduce or eliminate stress.
This is a horrible reason to drink.
Drinking alcohol to forget about a stressful situation is a great way for the stress to multiply itself tomorrow morning.
This is also a great way to become an alcoholic over time.
If you are feeling stressed out, stay sober, and don’t drink anything.
Rule #3: Don’t drink alcohol to deal with bad news, or a bad personal situation.
Life is messy, and bad things happen to everyone.
Divorce.
Death of a loved one.
Getting let go from a job you love.
These situations require you to be at 100%.
When you’re drinking booze, you are NOT at 100%.
In these tough, life situations, it’s always best to stay sober, eat healthy, get good sleep, and hit the gym.
You’ll get through it more quickly that way, and see the other side of things faster.
Rule #4: Reduce alcohol to 2 drinks per week, maximum, if you’re trying to lose body fat.
Zero drinks is an even better option.
Booze adds empty calories to your diet.
But more importantly are the “other” negative side effects.
Impacted sleeping.
Poor recovery.
Raised heart rate.
Lowered inhibitions.
It’s always best to avoid alcohol if you’re trying to lose weight – it’s doing nothing for you.
Rule #5: Never drink to the point of inebriation.
This is a tough one…
But you should never drink with the strict intention of getting drunk.
If you’re hearing that, and saying “Then what’s the point”, my suggestion to you is to eliminate drinking altogether.
That’s not a very good sign if that’s the first thing that comes to your mind.
Rule #6: If you’re wondering if you’re drinking too much, you are.
This is universal.
If you’ve ever thought, “Hmmm… am I drinking too much booze lately?”
The answer is yes.
The answer is ALWAYS yes in that situation.
If you ever ask yourself that question, it’s time to take a step back and reflect.
If I asked you to take a month off of alcohol, could you do it?
If the thought of a month away from booze sounds crazy, perhaps that should tell you something as well.
Alcohol has been around for thousands of years.
It’s not going anywhere – it’s built into the fabric of society like no other substance.
But be intentional with it.
Be careful with your choices.
Do you have any personal “alcohol rules”?
If so, hit reply – what are they?
I’d love to hear from you!
