Without any further ado, let’s get started..

N.W.A. Tip Of The Week

A friend of mine asked me the other day, “Hey, man, do you worry that GLP-1’s are going to hurt your business?”

I smiled.

It was a good question, and to an outsider, the answer may seem to be a big yes.

GLP-1’s are everywhere; Ozemic and Wegovy are all the rage these days, being prescribed in record numbers across the United States.

The rest of us have finally caught up to Hollywood; it seems everyone knows someone who’s currently on one of these appetite suppressing medications.

Let me be the first to say this.

I don’t regard taking medications for weight loss as “cheating”.

You should use all the tools you have at your disposal when it comes to weight loss.

GLP-1’s are in the same category as gastric bypass surgery when it comes to the “cheating” aspect.

If a medical intervention allows you to lose the weight and become a healthier person because of it, it’s a good thing.

If you’ve tried – and failed – for years to get the weight off of you, and nothing has worked, and you try a GLP-1 and it works, this is a net positive.

I have had many clients who have used them.

Some of those clients had them prescribed by a licensed physician; others have taken them “off-label” (without a prescription) as a means to get into an extremely lean state.

They truly work, and work well.

They reduce your appetite to next to nothing – so much so, that food is the last thing on your mind (and in many cases, actually makes you nauseous, and you don’t want to eat).

For the record, if you are going to take GLP-1’s, I highly recommend you do so under the proper supervision of a medical professional; you don’t want to mess around with your health like that.

That being said, you have to be extremely careful when taking them.

First, never use more than the recommended dosage prescribed by a Doctor.

These drugs are powerful. They are not to be messed around with.

A little also goes a long way.

You won’t need much to reduce your appetite and make eating less food more manageable.

Second, you must be eating ample protein and strength training while using them.

This is so, so, so incredibly important to understand.

When you lose weight, if you are not strength training regularly and eating ample protein, about half of the weight you lose will be muscle, and about half will be fat.

This is true whether you take a GLP-1 or not, it is not unique to those on the medication.

(This is why I require strength training and a high protein diet with my fat loss clients.)

However, since GLP-1’s cause rapid weight loss, and restrict your appetite, allowing for a massive calorie deficit, the risk for muscle loss increases.

Along with that, the risk for brittle bones (aka osteoporosis) becomes a real possibility.

If you are not lifting weights and eating ample protein while taking GLP-1’s, you are putting your health at risk.

Please be sure you understand this.

This is why often times you see people who have lost loads of weight on GLP-1’s who have a “sickly” look to them.

They didn’t strength train.

They didn’t eat enough protein.

And although they now have less body fat, they have lost a large amount of skeletal muscle, leaving themselves weak and frail.

The clients I’ve had who have been on these drugs have complained to me that they don’t feel like eating, and getting enough protein in becomes very difficult on these drugs.

I reiterate over and over again how important it is to maintain a high protein intake.

Do what you need to do – whey shakes are a great option in these situations; they won’t fill you up as much as meat, and whey is high quality and highly bioavailable.

Are there other potential side effects as well?

It appears there are, yes.

But they need to be studied more.

It’s possible the other, more rare side effects could be from the abuse of GLP-1’s, and/or taking too much of the medication.

It’s also possible the additional side effects could be from a lack of nutrition while on the drugs, and not from the drugs themselves.

There are too many variables currently; the long term effects need to be looked at more closely.

Now, back to the question at hand.

Do I worry these drugs will put me out of business?

No, I don’t.

Not at all; not even close.

Coaching is about building a human relationship.

It’s about connecting with people.

It’s about fitness optimization, and there will always be a market for that.

Even if the whole world goes on Ozempic, people will still need to know how to be fueled properly for their unique metabolism.

They’ll still need to have properly designed strength training programs.

There will also always be people looking to do the opposite – about 1/2 of my clients are currently focused on muscle building, not just fat loss.

And Ozempic or no Ozempic, the need for a real life human to support you, coach you, keep you on track, and hold you accountable will always be there.

No weight loss drug can ever replace that.
